White Swiss Shepherd

The White Swiss Shepherd originates from...

Otherwise known as the Berger Blanc Suisse, this breed was first recognised in Switzerland in 1991. The founding dog of the White Swiss Shepherd is believed to be the great grand sire of the German Shepherd, which happened to be completely white in colour. While white dogs were eventually rejected by many European countries and clubs, the beauty of the white shepherd was harnessed by a select few and developed. In October 2017, the White Swiss Shepherd was officially recognised as a pedigree dog breed by The Kennel Club.

The White Swiss Shepherd is characterised by...

Built like a German Shepherd and similar in all but colour, the breed is a powerful, medium-sized dog with a strong, fine head and athletic frame. The nose is typically black in colour and the ears are high set. The coat type can be long or short, and must always be white. These dogs are typically very high shedders.

The average White Swiss Shepherd...

In general, a White Swiss Shepherd will weigh 25-40 kg depending on whether it is male or female. The exercise needs will be high as this is an active and intelligent breed that benefits from both physical and mental stimulation. Regarding temperament, the White Swiss Shepherd is generally well balanced, with a friendly and confident personality. When socialised from a young age, these dogs can make excellent family pets and are particularly good with children. Due to their intelligence, the White Swiss Shepherd is easily trained and a fast learner.

Weaknesses...

The breed has been known to suffer with skin issues and degenerative joint disease, as well as hip dysplasia. As they are a deep chested breed, bloat poses a real threat, so you should always remain vigilant.
