With the extensive range of wet and dry dog food currently on the market, sometimes it can be hard to decide which diet is the best for your canine companion.

But when it comes down to it, the most important consideration is the ingredients the food contains and whether they will provide your pup with the nutrients they need to lead a happy, healthy and active life.

And this is where the raw dog food diet comes in. Increasingly being fed by concerned dog owners across the country, this diet (also known as the BARF diet) involves a combination of raw, fresh meat, bones and vegetables.

There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that feeding our pets on a diet that is close to what their ancestors would have eaten is better for their health and makes for happier, more active canines.

Which is why many pet nutrition exerts and dog trainers are highlighting the benefits of feeding pets in this way.

"Precautions can be taken to ensure your dog stays healthy and these are feeding a raw diet and not giving annual boosters," says Steven Havers, dog behaviour and training expert at haversspecialiseddogtraining.co.uk.

"There is sufficient evidence from vets and scientists that raw food improves the health of the dog and that annual boosters actually suppress the immune system as you are infecting the dog with a bacteria to which they are already immune."

For many owners the best way to feed this diet will be by purchasing frozen dog food online, which can be stored and fed to your pooch as and when required.

This is not only an affordable way to feed your canine companion, but it also enables you to see that only prime cuts of meat have been used so you can be confident that your dog is getting the best diet possible.
