Description

Samylin is a food supplement used where there are concerns regarding liver function. Samylin contains SAMe which is a precursor of glutathione. This is known to be required by the liver and elevated levels are able to increase the effective functioning of the liver. Other ingredients include the antioxidant and thiol donor Silybin (found in Milk Thistle), Vitamin E and Vitamin C. Samylin is used at a rate of one sachet per 5kg of bodyweight per day, mixed with food. The tablets should be given whole, it is not recommended that they are crushed before being fed.

This product was advised by my vet, because my dog has liver disease, and it certainly keeps him going. It supports his liver, and in my opinion, I think it has extended his life. Excellent product.

Same as in the more expensive packs for small dogs but with a letter scale, the correct dose can be weighed out and you save a small fortune.

Samylin or hepatiNorm?

Jenny

Which is best for my cat?

  • VioVet Staff

The two supplements are slightly different. I recommend reading our blog on the topic, 'Supporting your pet's liver' for more information. It is best to follow your vet's guidance on which supplement if your pet is being treated by them.

Dog with MUO and on steroids

Bernadett

Dear All,
My dog has Meningoencephalitis of unknown origin (MUO) and is undergoing cytarabine treatments and taking daily steroid tablets. Is it ok to give this supplement to her if the treatments aim to suppress the immune system?
Thank you!

  • VioVet Staff

Samylin is intended to support the liver. MUO does not impact the liver specifically, I assume you are potentially using it as therapy for MUO can put strain on the liver? it is worth running the use of this supplement past your vet before using it if this is the case. They can let you know where it is safe alongside their treatment protocol, and also if it is necessary to use anyway.

Side effects on very senior dog taking Samylin?

April Young

Just been given Samylin tablets for my 16yr old terrier to boost his liver function after ultrasound at vets. No leaflet with the box of tablets. Want to know what to look out for in my dog in response to these supplements to be taken for 6 wks. Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Samylin is a supplement so there are no listed side effects for the product, like you would find with a licensed medication. However similar to any food your dog could be allergic/intolerant to one of the ingredients. This can show as skin or gastrointestinal issues (vomiting/diarrhoea). If any of these occur then you should see your vet to discuss further.

Prescription or over counter?

Juliet

I have received Samylin Medium from the vets today. I am unsure if it was on prescription - does it have to be?

  • VioVet Staff

Samylin is a supplement and so can be bought over the counter without prescription.

Diabetic vs Samilyn

Wena Cintiawati

is it okey to give samilyn to my senior diabetic mini dachshund?

  • VioVet Staff

There are no specific ingredients in this supplement that are a cause for concern with diabetics. However any change in diet can affect your dog's insulin requirements so you should run the use of this supplement past your vet to be safe.

Dosage for dogs

Monica Gunawan

Hi I have 9 kilo dog, it says to give 2 small instead of 1 medium. For the sake of purchasing (giving two means double the price) is it safe to give one medium tablet instead maybe with longer interval days ? Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

I recommend contacting the manufacturer direct (VetPlus) regarding your query as unfortunately they won't discuss customer queries with us. They should be able to advise on this.

Any good for gallbladder problems?

Kerry Dean

  • VioVet customer since 2016
  • From: West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Hi, my beagle has been diagnosed with sludge in his gallbladder and is taking various meds but the vets has said this may also help. With it mainly making reference to helping with liver complaints, do you know if it can help the gallbladder? Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

The gallbladder is contained just within the liver lobes, with the bile duct closely involved with the liver itself. For the gall to be produced normally the liver must be working effectively so it is highly likely that this close relationship is why your vet has recommended the product. If the gall bladder is affected then it could have a knock on effect on the liver. I advise asking your vet this question too so they can provide a more specific answer for you.
